Breaking Local News Report

This morning’s commute across New York State is seeing several disruptions due to various incidents on the roadways. In Islip, a crash on the Southern State Parkway westbound at Exit 41S – CR 57, reported at 8:17 AM, has resulted in the blocking of one right lane and the shoulder, causing delays for westbound traffic.

Additionally, another crash involving injuries occurred on I-84 westbound east of Exit 69 in Southeast around 8:03 AM. This incident has blocked the right shoulder at mile marker 70.1, complicating westbound flow. Shortly before, at 7:59 AM, a crash on I-495 westbound at Exit 62 in Brookhaven led to the closure of the left shoulder.

Vehicle breakdowns have also contributed to the congestion. At 7:50 AM, a disabled vehicle on the Northern State Parkway westbound at Exit 31A in North Hempstead and another on the Southern State Parkway westbound at Exit 28S in Hempstead, reported at 7:03 AM, both resulted in the closure of the right shoulders. There was also a disabled truck reported at 7:38 AM on NY 27 westbound at Exit 48 in Islip, further blocking the right shoulder.

In Yonkers, a severe incident involving fire department activity and a building collapse on US 9 northbound between Main St. and Manor House Square has led to the closure of all lanes since 5:34 AM, significantly impacting traffic in the area. Meanwhile, in Syracuse, falling debris has necessitated the closure of one right lane on NY-930B southbound between W. Genesee St and Erie Blvd W since 6:09 AM.

Road sweeping activities are also affecting traffic in Manhattan. Harlem River Drive southbound between the end route at Harlem River Drive and FDR Drive has one right lane closed for cleaning from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM, as reported at 8:18 AM. Similar sweeping activities are taking place in the Battery Park Underpass northbound, affecting the same lane during the same hours.

Commuters are advised to plan for additional travel time or seek alternative routes where possible to avoid these disruptions.

Senate Education Committee Advances Bill to Promote Electric School Buses

The Senate Education Committee has favorably reported Senate Bill No. 3263 with significant amendments aimed at enhancing the adoption of electric school buses across New Jersey. The updated bill allows boards of education to secure extended lease terms for electric school buses, surpassing the previous 10-year limit to match the service life of these buses.

Under the revised legislation, the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) is authorized to act as a government aggregator, facilitating the procurement of electric buses and related services for school districts, counties, municipalities, and other local entities. This amendment extends the capabilities of the NJSBA beyond its current scope, allowing it to secure essential energy services and equipment for a broader range of public units.

Additionally, the amendments remove the option for boards of education to use competitive contracting under certain conditions, streamlining the procurement process. The legislation also updates the “Electric Discount and Energy Competition Act” to accommodate these new provisions.

This legislative move marks a significant step towards modernizing school transportation and embracing environmentally friendly alternatives by aligning leasing terms with the operational longevity of electric buses.
